Why can't Yahoo! Alerts tech support read?

I long time ago in a place far, far away I created some Yahoo! Alerts. Lately I have noticed that I am getting the news that is delivered within these alerts, is not really news. I get the info 4 – 6 hours beforehand via RSS feeds. So I went to the Yahoo! Alerts page and did not find any alerts or a way to turn them off. So I contacted Yahoo! customer service. Here is the first message that I sent on March 22:

My message is about: How to turn off my Alerts

Type your feedback here:

I am trying to turn off some alerts.

There is no option to do so within the

text of the email itself. What follows

below is the full text of an alert just

sent to me (headers included):

I promptly got a reply the next day, March 23:

Hello,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Alerts.

We understand you have a question in regards to turn a Yahoo! Alert off.

There are three ways to turn an Alert off and we'd love to show you

how!

* Suspend an Alert - this is useful when you want to temporarily

disable an alert without deleting it. Go to Yahoo! Alerts:

And sign-in to the account you used to set up the Alert. Click on the "My Alerts" tab at the top of the page. Click the green "On" button next to the Alert you wish to suspend to the right of the Alert name you

want to suspend. When the red "Off" button is displayed, the Alert is inactive.

* Suspend all Alerts - this is useful when you want to temporarily disable all of your Alerts without deleting them (for example, when you go on vacation). Visit Yahoo! Alerts at:

And sign-in to the account you used to set up the Alert. Click on the My Alerts tab at the top of the page. Click the off link at the bottom of the page next to "Turn All Alerts". To turn all Alerts back on, click the on link next to "Turn All Alerts".

* Delete the Alert entirely - there are two ways to do this:

1. You can click on the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the Alert

you have received. If you don't see the unsubscribe link, there should be a URL you can copy and paste in your browser address bar that will lead you to a site where you can unsubscribe.

2. Go to Yahoo! Alerts by visiting:

And sign-in to the account you used to set up the Alert. Click on The "My Alerts" tab at the top of the page. Click the icon which looks like a little garbage can to the right of the Yahoo! Alert you wish to delete. You will be asked to confirm that you want to delete theAlert. Click "Yes" to delete.

If you are having any issues please reply back to us as soon as

Possible and include any additional details and/or errors that you are experiencing. With this info we'd be happy to investigate this issue further.

We appreciate your time in writing in to us -- your input helps us to identify ways to constantly maintain and improve our service. We are always striving to keep Yahoo! Alerts as the best online notification site on the planet!

Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Alerts.

As I wanted to delete the alert entirely I followed that option the same day. Here is my response to Yahoo!:

When I do as directed go to:

http://alerts.yahoo.com/main.php?view=my...

The page states that:

You have not created any alerts

So in a nutshell the site says that I have no alerts though they are

showing up every day? What is the next step to determine how I can turn these off?

Thank you,

Lance

Now I think I was pretty clear in the above that even though I am receiving alerts there Web interface does not show any. I heard back from Yahoo! again on March 25. This is what they had to say

Hello Lance,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Alerts. It can take several days for a Yahoo! Alert deletion to take effect. If it has been more than a couple of days and you are still receiving Alerts, please forward these Alerts to us. Please forward the entire Alert message to us, including full headers.

For more information about the difference between full headers and brief headers, please visit:

http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/confi...

Also include information on when exactly the Alert was cancelled. We will then pass this information on to our engineers.

Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Alerts.

Regards,

Jordan

So I waited a few days, while these alerts continued to show up on a regular basis. It got to be five days later, March 30 and it was still occurring. So I sent the note, with full headers (for the second time) with this comment:

To be extremely clear, when I log in and go to:

http://alerts.yahoo.com/main.php?view=my...

The page states:

You have not created any alerts

As the app is telling me that I do not have any alerts, I have no

method with which to cancel them. Basically there seems to be a

disconnect between the Web app that provides me with alert

functionality and the engine which delivers the alerts.

Thank you for your help in resolving this.

Lance

On April 4, 4 days later I get this from Yahoo! in response:

Hello Lance,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Alerts.

I believe that the problem you were experiencing was a transient one that shouldn't persist. The problem may have been caused by our system, or perhaps by your web browser or Internet connection. This information will help us to efficiently provide a solution.

Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Alerts.

Regards,

Derek

To which I promptly replied:

I do not receive error messages.

I receive alerts when my account says that I have none.

I want to turn them off.

There is no way of doing so.

The Web app says I have no alerts.

I am not doing anything to create the alert.

It happens everyday.

This needs to be escalated.

Why can't Yahoo! Alerts tech support read?
It looks like you failed to tell them that you are getting the alerts via RSS feeds. That could be the key for Yahoo to help you with your problem.
Reply:I have the same problem. Receive Alerts, Yahoo says I don't have any Alerts, can't edit any Alerts, can add new ones easily. Weird

Sent three posts to Yahoo regarding this problem. I has been at least a week now.

Hopefully Yahoo will get it figured out. Report It
